At approximately 9:30 pm on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, an Amtrak train derailed
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The train was traveling from Washington,
DC bound for New York City. Amtrak’s statement on the derailment
here. Amtrak has also set up a hotline for friends and family members to call
with questions about passengers. That phone number is 1-800-523-9101.
It is too early to determine what caused this particular train to derail.
There has been much speculation about the speed of the train on a curve
(where the speed limit reduces to 50mph); the condition of the well-used
track; mechanical issues with the locomotive or cars; overall infrastructure
issues; and many other potential causes. At this point, however, it is
just speculation; the
NTSB investigation is currently underway.
